The Personal Island — substrate canon

Canon

The personal island is the skyblock heart: ungated, always reachable from the hub, and the one place that is entirely yours. This page owns what it offers.

Home production, the complete trio — each capability skill-capped, each strictly worse than its adventure-island counterpart, so home sustains and the world excels:

  • Ore generators — output capped at your mineable tier, floor rates (D-MINING-CAVES-05).
  • Planting — anything up to your skill tier, except biome-locked region crops (D-FARMING-FORESTRY-03).
  • Ponds — buildable water yielding basic fish only at floor rates; island-locked fish never school at home (D-FISHING-02 does the work). Cooking gets a home supply line.

Island upgrades are built structures with real costs and real function: a Windmill quickening crops, a Crystal Beacon warming mining XP, a Greenhouse defying seasons, a Warehouse deepening storage. Construction costs materials and Coins (personal-scale Great-Works flavor, honest sinks); every gameplay bonus routes through the provider rate hooks — structures are earned speed, never bought power. The catalog and magnitudes are owner data.

Personalization is the island's cosmetic canvas: time-of-day, weather, season, sky (auroras, eclipses, two moons…), ambience, and music configs; full themes (Ancient Ruins, Pirate Cove, Crystal Garden…) that reskin NPCs, sounds, props, and particles. Base configs are free; premium looks split between the shop and earned-only prestige unlocks — the vision's earned-cosmetics-are-status line, drawn on the biggest canvas. Every island also rolls one procedural wonder — a unique landmark (giant crystal, ancient tree, meteor crater) that makes the plot yours.

Visitors get owner-granted roles — Builder, Decorator, Farmer, Storage — the personal analog of guild ranks, sized for friends.

The island remembers. The Island Chronicle auto-records milestones (first tree, first legendary fish, first million Coins) for visitors to read, and legacy statues — monuments unlocked by major deeds — display achievement in stone. Both are presentation over existing truth: deeds from the Almanac, ordinals from records, plus a small island-scoped event log.

Living-island ambience (fireflies, perching birds, autumn leaves, jumping fish) and interactive furniture (mailbox, weapon racks, aquariums, trophy shelves) are adopted as content-pass flavor.

Decisions

D-ISLAND-SUBSTRATE-01 — island upgrades: built in play, bonuses by rate hook (proposed)

Functional structures with material + Coin construction costs; gameplay effects exclusively via provider hooks; storage and utility upgrades as island infrastructure. The substrate's long-term build loop, P2A-clean because it is earned in play.

Rejected: cosmetic-only structures (discards the investment loop); parking the category (third parking-lot lap for the Windmill).

D-ISLAND-SUBSTRATE-02 — personalization is earned + shop, split by prestige (proposed)

Base configs free; premium skies and themes divided between shop cosmetics (the sanctioned monetization surface) and earned-only prestige looks. Standard vision split, applied to the island canvas.

Rejected: shop-only (abandons the prestige lane where it shines most); earned-only (owner's revenue surface, deliberately kept).

D-ISLAND-SUBSTRATE-03 — home ponds: basic fish, floor rates (proposed)

The generator precedent applied to water, completing the home production trio. Island-locked fish stay island-locked; home ponds feed Cooking, not the bazaar's rare-fish market.

Rejected: no home fishing (the mob-farm precedent — owner chose the generous line here, as with generators and planting).

D-ISLAND-SUBSTRATE-04 — the Chronicle and legacy statues present existing truth (proposed)

Deed and record displays plus a minimal island event log — no parallel achievement system. Visitors read your story where you live it.

Rejected: a full island-scoped achievement system (the Almanac is the book of deeds; the island is a viewing room).

D-ISLAND-SUBSTRATE-05 — visitor roles: owner-granted, friend-sized (proposed)

Builder / Decorator / Farmer / Storage grants, owner-managed. Personal islands get their own light vocabulary rather than borrowing guild ranks.

Rejected: no visitor permissions (co-op building is skyblock culture); reusing guild ranks (a friend is not a guild member).

D-ISLAND-SUBSTRATE-06 — the corpus fate table (proposed)

V1 idea Fate
Save/load island layouts (Combat/Farming/Holiday) Parked — schematic-swap tech needs an engine probe before any promise
Pet sanctuary + pet jobs (fetch, guard, bonuses) Parked — htpets overlap intent check; job bonuses would be rate hooks when it runs
Functional processing assets (Ore Crusher, Sawmill, Cheese Press…) Deferred → crafting content passes (they are crafting stations wearing island skins)
Forge energy system (coal → fuel → machines) Parked — a new mechanic with no owner
Constellation progression Parked — charming; a new progression surface needs its own session
Living NPCs (progress-aware dialogue) Adopted via quests-npcs canon (progressive dialogue is already the system)
Collectible displays (music discs, plushies, fossils) Adopted as interactive furniture + collections content

Rejected: designing parked items now.

Tuning

  • data/island-substrate.json — upgrade catalog (costs, hook magnitudes), config/theme registries with earned/shop split, pond rates, visitor role capabilities, wonder table. Owner-edited; V1 names illustrative.

Implementation

Substrate work is world/platform territory shared with guild islands; no progression mod owns it. Upgrade bonuses consume existing provider hooks; chronicle/statues read hfalmanac + hfrecords; theme/config cosmetics ride the wardrobe-style unlock paths. Home generators/planting/ponds land together as one substrate feature pass.

Open questions

  • Upgrade catalog, costs, magnitudes — owner tuning.
  • Theme/sky earned-vs-shop assignments — owner content pass.
  • Wonder table and reroll policy (fixed at creation vs rerollable) — owner call.
  • Island size/expansion mechanics — not in the V1 corpus; needs its own intake if wanted.
  • Chronicle milestone list — content pass with each system.
